Women are not lagging behind in diplomacy, as well as in other fields. They have served as ambassadors of Bangladesh Mission in 9 countries of the world. Gradually, women are also playing a bright role in their work.
There are now 9 women diplomats representing Bangladesh in foreign missions.
Rabab Fatima is serving as the Permanent Representative and Ambassador of Bangladesh Mission to the United Nations. Sayeda Muna Tasneem is acting High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
Ambassador to Mexico – Abida Islam, High Commissioner to Mauritius – Regina Ahmed, High Commissioner to Brunei – Nahida Rahman Sumna, Ambassador to Vietnam – Samina Naz, Ambassador to Poland – Sultana Laila Rahman, Ambassador to Jordan – Nahida Sobhan and Sadia Faiza to Brazil. Mashfi bint Shams is also acting as the Secretary (East) of the Ministry.
Since 1989, Bangladeshi women have been working as professional diplomats. At that time, Nasim Ferdous joined the Foreign Service as the first woman diplomat. However, Mahmuda Haque Chowdhury was the first woman ambassador to Bangladesh.
Women have been able to gradually build their position in diplomacy. Ismat Jahan is the first senior secretary among women diplomats. Majeda Rafikunnesa has done the first NDC course among women diplomats. Shahnaz Ghazi was the first woman Consul General.
When asked to comment on the occasion of International Women’s Day, Bangladesh High Commissioner to Brunei, Nahida Rahman Sumna told banglanews, “I have Women’s Day every day. I don’t see myself as a woman at work, but as a man.”
If you want to know about the progress of women in diplomacy, AK Abdul Momen told banglanews, ‘Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has given instructions for women’s empowerment. We are giving priority to women as directed by the Prime Minister. Our women are successfully serving in various missions.”
He hopes that women will continue to be successful in diplomacy.
