Bangladesh Leading the Way in South Asia by Ranking 5th on Global COVID Recovery Index

Bangladesh has risen up eight grades to rank 5th out of 121 countries worldwide on Nikkei’s COVID-19 Recovery Index. According to the most recent edition of the rankings, issued on Thursday, Bangladesh is the best-performing country in South Asia, scoring 80 points.

The index rates countries and regions on infection control, vaccine rollouts, and social mobility. It is updated at the end of each month. At the end of March, Bangladesh was ranked 13th on the index. Nepal is the second-highest ranked country in South Asia, and its 79-point rating keeps it in sixth place globally.

Pakistan is ranked third in the area, at number 23 in the worldwide list, followed by Sri Lanka, which is mired in a crisis. Meanwhile, with 62.5 points, India is tied for 70th place with Haiti. Qatar and the United Arab Emirates tied for first place with 87 points.

COVID-19 infections have been declining in Bangladesh in recent months. On Friday, the ministry announced 19 new cases, bringing the total number of illnesses to 1,952,766. However, no new cases of the disease were reported, bringing the total to 29,127.

According to government statistics, 75.46% of the population has received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccination, with 68.19% receiving the second shot.
