Bangladesh Passport Behind Myanmar and Sri Lanka in Global Index, Dropping One Notch to 104th Place

In the newest issue of the Henley Passport Index, the pioneer ranking of world travel credentials, Bangladesh’s passport lost one notch in the last three months. Bangladesh is now ranked 104th out of 112 countries in the Henley Passport Index 2022 Q2, which was recently announced. It was placed 103rd in January. Bangladeshi passport holders can still travel to 40 foreign countries without obtaining a visa, as they could last year and early this year.

Bangladesh, as it did in January, shares its most recent position with Kosovo and Libya. Singapore and Japan, stay at the top of the index, with visa-free travel to 192 countries, two Asian countries. The position of war-torn Ukraine is one of the most interesting adjustments in the latest iteration of the index. Ukraine’s passport is now ranked 34th in the world, allowing visa-free travel to 143 countries, a new high for the country. Meanwhile, Russia is ranked 49th in the world, with visa-free travel to 117 countries.

The Indian passport now ranks 85th among South Asian passports, with holders granted visa-free travel (or visa-on-arrival) to 59 countries. Myanmar, despite its military dictatorship, is still ahead of Bangladesh. With visa-free/on-arrival access to 46 destinations, the country ranks 98th. Bhutan’s passport, which grants visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry to 53 countries, is ranked 91st in the world in 2022 Q2. At the ranking, Sri Lanka is slightly ahead of Bangladesh in 103rd place. The passport allows citizens to travel to 41 countries without a visa or with a visa on arrival. Nepal, Pakistan, and Afghanistan performed worse in the index than Bangladesh in January, ranking 106th, 109th, and 112th, respectively.

Bangladeshi passports were ranked 68th in the world in 2006, and they have continued to deteriorate since then. The index is based on “exclusive” data provided by the International Air Transport Authority and encompasses 199 passports and 227 different travel destinations. Extensive research is used to improve the data, which is updated as visa policies change.
